Following the recent disaster in Haiti, Izzie Spencer from the Scheduling and Logistics team decided to raise awareness and generate funds for Nemco to send an 'Aquabox' to Port au Prince.
Each robust plastic tank is filled with water purification tablets and packed with essential welfare items for a disaster situation. Once the welfare contents have been removed, each AQUABOX can be used to purify up to 1100 litres of polluted water, making it safe and pleasant to drink. As an example, 1100 litres is equal to 5,000 cups - enough for a family of four people (drinking 10 cups per day) for about four months.
Staff members were invited to ‘work an hour for Haiti’ and contribute 1 hour’s wages to the cause. This was matched by the company making a total of £320 – enough to donate 4 Aquaboxes and make a really positive contribution to the cause.
For those who would like to know more about the scheme (run by The Rotary Club):
Haiti is the one of the poorest countries in the world and is struggling to recover from years of violence, insecurity and massive natural disasters. An estimated 1.8 million residents were violently shaken by an earthquake and two aftershocks on 12 January. The earthquake hit about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the densely-populated Haitian capital, causing massive damage to property and loss of life. “Children and their families have been forced from their homes into an extremely stressful and dangerous environment,” said Ian Rodgers, Senior Emergency Advisor for the Save the Children, “The priority now is to provide food, clean water, shelter and medical assistance to children and their families,” he added.
