According to a recent study by the HPA (Health Protection Authority) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, up to 20% of all the cases of Legionnaire's Disease in England and Wales could be caused by vehicle windscreen washes.
The preliminary results suggest that using water alone, without the addition of a screenwash additive - thought to kill off the bacteria, could allow the bacteria to grow in the stagnant washer bottle and then be transmitted into an aerosol when sprayed onto the car windscreen.
The HPA say more research is required to see whether simply adding screenwash could play a role in prevention of Legionnaire's Disease.
